The Decline of the Long Iron
For most of golf's history, the long iron was the standard tool for distance from the fairway. The hollow construction positions the centre of gravity low and toward the back of the head, launching the ball on a higher trajectory than the equivalent long iron and producing a softer, more controllable descent.
The practical result is that a 22-degree hybrid (equivalent to a 4-iron in approximate distance) can be hit from moderate rough, tight fairways, and even difficult lies that would defeat a long iron. The hybrid does not require the steep, ball-first strike of an iron; a sweeping strike delivers the same or better results. How to Hit a Hybrid
Many golfers who own hybrids fail to get the most from them because they treat the club like an iron and swing steeply. A hybrid rewards a more sweeping motion, similar to a fairway wood, with the ball positioned slightly forward of centre in the stance. The shaft is shorter than a fairway wood and longer than a mid-iron, which means the swing plane is shallower than an iron but steeper than a wood.
